There are different ways to fight the fire. The fire extinguisher is one of these means, and it is one of the most relevant. It allows intervention in a few minutes to extinguish the first flames. To choose the right extinguisher, you must first know the risks in your establishment or home.
The Powder Extinguisher
Advantages: You can use it on almost all fire types
- Disadvantages: the powder is messy and causes damage
Water Spray Extinguisher
- Advantages: Used for class A and B fires, it makes it possible to stop the propagation more easily thanks to an additive that makes the water more penetrating.
- Disadvantages: The additive is very irritating
The Gas Extinguisher (CO2)
- Advantages: The fire without CO2 can not propagate anymore. It allows extinguishing a fire efficiently without any residue or damage.
- Disadvantages: It can only be used on small fires. At times, the gas can be super cold and subject you to frostbite if not correctly used.
Foam Extinguisher
- Advantages: It is the only product that puts out fire effectively, with no danger of spreading the flame, mostly for “liquid” fires of class B.
- Disadvantages: You can’t use it on electrical circuits because the foam is highly corrosive and conductive.
How to Use a Fire Extinguisher?
Several rules must be taken into account for the use of a fire extinguisher:
- Check that the type of extinguisher is suitable for the flames by identifying it using the sign.
- Unpin the device to make it operational.
- Hammer the handle to pierce the gas canister. (Turn the face to avoid any projection in the eyes)
- Test the extinguisher with a brief pressure on the handle while keeping away from the flames.
- Approach the source of the fire by stooping to avoid hot fumes and vapors, which tend to gain height.
- Apply pressure on the discharge handle to create a continuous jet (find a position with your back to the wind to avoid the progression of the flames towards you).
How to Maintain Your Fire Extinguisher?
There are two types of maintenance for your fire extinguisher.
The first: “Preventive Maintenance”
It is mandatory each year and ensures the functional condition of the device. All components of the extinguisher should be checked: this may include replacing parts or lubricating. This check must be entered on the label of the fire extinguisher park and in the establishment’s safety register.
The Second: “Corrective Maintenance”
Fire extinguishers must be repaired following damage, malfunction, or use: this action can be called “reconditioning” or “perfect repair.” This maintenance is recommended every 3 to 5 years.
